8+
Some independent schools have selective entry at 8+. These tend to be boys’ schools, including Westminster Under School, King’s College, St Paul’s School, Dulwich Prep and Wetherby prep. There are a limited number of 8+ places at girls’ schools. It is not uncommon for a child who was not successful at 7+ to succeed at the 8+ entry point.
The selection process for 8+ is very similar to 7+. Your child will be required to sit a competitive entry exam. These exams are normally in English, Mathematics and Reasoning. The selection process is usually carried out over two or more stages. This can be a written exam in these subjects, a classroom experience and/or an interview with the Head of the school or a senior staff member.
Few girls’ schools have this as an option (although places occasionally become available). Through our bespoke service we can assess whether your child is better suited for the, 7+, 8+ or 11+ entry points.
By sitting a Grit Education 8+ mock exam your child will gain invaluable experience by sitting an 8+ written paper under real exam conditions, which will help him/her build his/her confidence and exam technique. These mock exams are more challenging than the 7+ exam.
At Grit Education we produce premium-quality 8+ English, mathematics and reasoning papers set at increasing levels of challenge, to progressively build your child’s knowledge, confidence and performance.
We can provide a range of 8+ bespoke services. For example, we can assess your child’s academic ability, or we can provide an aftercare consultation service to discuss your child’s performance in our mock exam. We can also prepare your child for the 8+ interview or any general advice or guidance you need related to the 8+ selection process.
We understand that most Year 3 children may have little or no experience, or the skills, required for a formal written exam or have not been successful in their 7+ exam. At Grit Education we create an environment that will closely represent real exam conditions. Our mock exam papers reflect the standard and format of the actual 8+ exams that your child will sit. Our mock exam papers are produced by ourselves and are distinct to our practice papers.
Following the mock exam, you will receive a personalised feedback report on all aspects of your child’s performance. As a result of doing a mock exam your child will have gained the confidence and exam techniques needed to succeed.
The key benefits for your child are:
At Grit Education we know that the 8+ exam is more challenging than the 7+. By using one of our premium practice papers you will help you gain a clear picture of your child’s ability levels, which in turn will help you create a plan of action for your child, especially if he/she was not successful at the 7+ exam or didn’t do the 7+ because you thought he/she was not ready.
At Grit Education we have undertaken thorough research and had numerous consultations with students who have actually sat the exam, parents and educational specialists as well as current and former schoolteachers to find out what knowledge and skills are sought from a child who sits the 7+ entrance exams.
We have made it simpler for parents to monitor their child’s progress by devising a unique three-step solution: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Each pack contains five papers and a full answer scheme. Within each pack each paper becomes progressively more challenging.
Beginner pack: We advise that your child starts this pack at least a year before the actual exam, or straight away once you have decided that your child will take the 8+ or if he/she hasn’t done a formal written paper before. This will provide a baseline of your child’s ability.
Intermediate pack: We suggest that your child works through this pack at the halfway point or at least six months before the actual exam. This will provide an indication of how much progress he/she has made since the Beginner level.
Advanced pack: We strongly recommend that your child works through this pack prior to the actual exam. This will provide an indication of how much progress he/she made since the Intermediate level and their overall exam readiness
A Grit Education 8+ English pack contains five papers. Each paper comprises a comprehension and composition section. The passage used in the comprehension section can be either fiction, nonfiction or a poem. The composition section could involve a descriptive writing task based on the comprehension passage, writing about a picture or writing a creative story based on a given scenario.
A 8+ Maths pack contains five papers. Each paper will test your child’s knowledge and application of Year 3 maths concepts, which will be a combination of mental maths and word problems. The Advanced level pack will test some of the higher-level Year 3 concepts and foundation-level Year 4 concepts.
A 8+ Reasoning pack contains five papers. Each paper will test your child’s verbal and nonverbal reasoning skills. This can include decoding, understanding vocabulary and identifying shapes and patterns.
At Grit Education, we understand that every child’s and family’s circumstances and needs are unique, which is why we have developed a package of bespoke services to assist you on your 8+ journey. Please get in touch because we can tailor this service to meet your needs. Some of these services include:
ASSESSMENT
We can assess your child’s academic ability in all subject areas and provide a report to help plan their studies in a more holistic and targeted way by taking account of personality type, maturity and interest This will be particularly helpful if your child wasn’t successful in their 7+ or haven’t done any formal exams.
Benefits of our assessment:
CONSULTATION
We can provide an aftercare consultation service to discuss your child’s performance in our mock exam or just chat about the right school for you as a family or to find out more about the 8+ exam.
Benefits of our consultation:
PRACTICE INTERVIEW
The 8+ interview is slightly different from the 7+ interview in respect of question types. For example, there might be a few more academic questions or there might be some on current affairs and general knowledge, but the structure normally remains same. Some schools may also invite the parents for an interview.
Each school will have its own interview format. In some cases, it will be one on one, or your child will be paired with another child or take part in a group exercise. Like the 7+ interview the purpose of the 8+ interview is for the school to gain insight into your child’s personality, abilities and interests to help determine whether your child is a good fit for their school.
We understand that for your Year 3 child, listening and answering questions with an unfamiliar teacher in a formal interview could be a worrying experience. A Grit Education practice interview will gently guide and support your child through all aspects of the interview performance. Afterwards we will provide a personalised feedback report on how your child has performed, identifying areas of strength and those in need of development.
Benefits of our practice interview include:
