11+
The selection process for 11+ admission will vary from school to school and sector to sector (state-funded grammar school or private fee-paying independent school). The 11+ exam will, however, generally comprise English, Mathematics and Reasoning papers.
For grammar schools your child will normally take the 11+ exam at the beginning of Year 6 at a single sitting in the school itself. Your child’s score will be ranked against other children’s scores and based on how high his/her relative ranking is and other factors that include age and catchment area, may be offered a place.
In the independent sector, the 11+ selection process varies a lot from school to school. Some schools set a pre-test to reduce the number of applicants that will sit the written paper. The pre-test tends to be a computerised cognitive ability test.
The written exam usually takes place in January of Year 6 in the school itself. Most schools produce the 11+ exam papers themselves, or in line with the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB). The exams are set in Mathematics and English. A Reasoning paper is also often set; this tends to be in verbal reasoning, although some may include nonverbal reasoning questions, too. Some schools might also have a section of more challenging questions, which are used for assessing candidates’ suitability for academic scholarships.
The second stage of the selection process normally involves a one-to-one interview conducted at the school with the head of department or Head of the school. Some schools include a group interview and/or a classroom assessment. Sometimes parents are also interviewed. Schools may invite all applicants to be interviewed or select only those who have done well enough in the written paper.
Practice is the key to success. Sitting a Grit Education 11+ mock exam alleviates that pressure and helps your child develop a more positive mindset. We create environments that closely represent real exam conditions so that when it comes to the actual day, he/she has the self-belief, stamina and the knowhow needed to perform to the best of his/her ability.
We understand that, for most Year 6 children, the 11+ exam is one of the most academically challenging and competitive exams they will have to face in their school life. For some children and parents this could be a particularly stressful and daunting prospect because the results could determine which senior school they go to, which, in turn, could affect their GCSE and A level outcomes and, ultimately, their university choices.
Our mock exam papers reflect the standard and format of the actual 11+ exams that your child will sit. Our mock exam papers are produced by ourselves and are distinct to our practice papers. Benefits of our Mock Exam:
The key benefits for you as a parent would be:
Wouldn’t you want to know what level your child is at before he/she takes any exam! By using one of our premium practice papers you will gain a clear picture of your child’s ability level in different subjects and topics, which in turn will help you to create a plan of action for your child.
At Grit Education we have undertaken thorough research and had numerous consultations with students who have actually sat the exam, parents and educational specialists as well as current and former schoolteachers to find out what knowledge and skills are sought from a child who sits the 11+ entrance exams.
We have made it simpler for parents to monitor their child’s progress by devising a unique three-step solution: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Each pack contains five papers and a full answer scheme. Within each pack, each paper becomes progressively more challenging. We have developed bespoke packs for the following exam formats: CEM, CSSE, GL Assessment & Independent School.
Beginner pack: We advise that your child works through this pack at least a year before the actual exam or straight away if they have limited experience of doing formal papers. This will provide a baseline of your child’s ability.
Intermediate Pack: We recommend that your child works through this pack at the halfway point or at least six months before the actual exam. This will provide an indication of how much progress they’ve made since the beginner level.
Advanced Pack: We strongly recommend that your child works through this pack prior to the actual exam. This will provide an indication of how much progress they’ve made since the intermediate level and their overall exam readiness
We appreciate that each family’s requirements and circumstances are unique. To help, we have devised a few questions for you to think about. If you can answer most of them — great — but if you are struggling you might want to get in touch.
